What's up, Next Gen Fam!

One of the best times to build a venture is when you’re still in school. Whether you’re in high school, college, or beyond, the following tips will help maximize your experience as a student.

Let's dive in!

TIPS

Interviews alums to build your mentor network.

Reach out to relevant alums with this template: “Hi Eric, I’m a Sophomore at Ohio State. I'm working on an article about sustainability. Would you be open to a 15-min call where I interview you about your work?" Framing this as an interview is key. That'll entice the alum to grant you their precious time. With each conversation, you’ll gain a new mentor for your network!

Grab coffee with your professor.

Professors are an incredible resource. They're paid to help students and are full of wisdom. Most students, however, don't take full advantage. Office Hours help, though a coffee chat can be even better. Coffee takes the professor outside their formal office, which helps you deepen bonds and glean insights beyond their field.

Meet the guest speaker before their session.

Popular speakers are usually overwhelmed after their session. But they're sometimes available beforehand. To stand out from the masses, email the speaker three days before their talk. “If you happen to arrive early, would you be able to meet briefly before your session? I'd love to ask you about...” This strategy is more likely to earn quality 1:1 time.

Email with your .edu address

Being a student holds power. People like helping students. When reaching out to an industry leader, use your school email. The .edu address will distinguish your name in their inbox while a personal G-Mail will not. You can also use subject lines like “Quick Question from OSU Student Entrepreneur” to further tap your student status.

QUESTION FOR YOU

Who is someone famous that you'd like to thank? Would it hurt to send them an email?
