What's up, Next Gen Fam!

As technology gradually frees us from rote tasks, the ability to think critically is becoming ever more important. This week, we're covering tips that'll help you think your way to success.

Let's dive in!

TIPS

Back-cast.

We live in a world full of distractions. That's why celebratory physician Dr. Peter Attia recommends "back-casting" to keep your life on track. To back-cast, write down: "What do you want your life to be like at 50? Where are you living and what makes you happy?" Then, if that's what 50 looks like, what does 40 look like?" Do the same for 30. Rinse and repeat until your back to today. Let these reflections be your guide.

Get advice from relevance, not proximity.

Most people get career advice from their family and friends. It's convenient. But billionaire founder Jeff Hoffman recommends getting advice from relevance as well. If you’re deciding on med-school, don't just talk to your advisor. Instead, reach out to an alum who's just 2-4 years ahead on that path. This way, you'll receive fully informed advice from a relatable source.

Think clearly.

Imagine you're deciding whether to raise money for your business. The hard facts say you should not fundraise, but your ego wants to raise money and brag to friends. Your ego is clouding your thinking. You're unable to see the hard facts and are more likely to make a mistake. So, to think clearly, be sure to suppress you ego and stay as objective as possible.

Keep a decision journal.

After you make big a decision, such as where to live after college, write down your reasoning in a decision journal. This can be a dedicated Google Doc or a physical notebook. Then, after the decision takes shape (perhaps a year later), look back at your notes. Whether or not the decision turned out well, reviewing your old notes helps you see if you followed smart reasoning. This will make you a better decision maker in the future!
