4 Unconventional Ways to Build Habits šŸš€

Why willpower is overrated, the importance of marginal gains, how to overcome obstacles, and roles at TechStars, HelloFresh, Cint, and more!

What's up, Next Gen Fam!

Author Will Durant once said, "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."

As we age, our level of health, wealth, and relationships is largely dependent on habits. This week, we're covering unique ways to build habits. Let's dive in!

TIPS

Pick your peers.

In zoology, you can predict the behavior of one chimp by observing which five chimps they hang out with the most. Legendary coach Jim Rohn extends this connection to people. Whether it's your health, wealth, or ambition, you are the average of those you spend time with. Aim to spend time around people who have the habits you want!

Prepare for obstacles.

When you build a new habit, you'll eventually run into obstacles. To stay on track, prepare for these obstacles in advance. Example: If you're looking to exercise more, visualize your future self feeling unmotivated but pushing through anyway. Think through every possible scenario. Then, when the obstacle actually presents itself, you'll be ready.

Value marginal gains.

People have a hard time imagining small, compounding gains. For example, getting 1% better at something feels insignificant. But when you get 1% better every day for a year, you end up 37 times better. That's a noticeable change! It's also easier to stay consistent when you aim for small improvements. So, don't underestimate the power of 1% gains. :)

Tweak your environment.

Habit building isn't all about willpower. What matters most is your environment. If you want to eat healthier, don't keep sweets at home. Or, if you'd like to start reading more, replace your TV with a stack of your favorite books. The key to habit formation is to make it easy. Don't become reliant on willpower. Keep it easy on yourself!
