4 Tips to Achieve Win-Win Negotiations 🚀

Lessons from Nelson Mandela, phrases that foster agreement, the value of curiosity, along with a TEDx opportunity, roles at unicorn startups, and more!

What's up, Next Gen Fam!

Great negotiators know how to resolve conflict at work and in life. They can turn differences into mutually beneficial solutions, without ever harming relationships.

Needless to say, the ability to negotiate well is invaluable. This week, we've covering tips for navigating disagreements and finding win-win scenarios.

Let's dive in!

TIPS

#1. Separate the people from the problem.

We are all emotional beings with deeply held values. In any disagreement, be sure to separate the person’s character from the task at hand. One strategy is to avoid "you" statements, since these tend to focus on the other person's character. Stay focused on the facts instead. :)

#2: Get curious about their perspective.

When someone shares a view that you strongly oppose, get curious about their worldview. Rather than refuting their position, ask questions to understand their perspective. This is something Nelson Mandela practiced to perfection when he freed his nation decades ago.

#3. Say "Yes, and..." instead of "but..."

Successful negotiation ends in mutual agreement. If the other side suggests a solution but you aren't fully aligned, respond with "yes, and..." instead of "but..." This helps you present your ideas in addition to (rather than contradicting) their views and fosters more agreement.

#4. Come to the solution together.

If you come up with a great solution, avoid stating it directly. During heated negotiations, opponents might resist ideas that aren't their own, even if it's the best option. So be sure to draw them in and let them come to the solution on their own.
